New initiative to nurture a love of reading in Columbia's children
October 31, 2009
Police Chief Tandy Carter and the Columbia Police Department have launched an exciting new initiative to nurture a love of reading in Columbia's children. This new program, the "Readers Are Leaders So Book 'em Now," is designed to get new and gently used books in the hands of our schoolchildren. It was launched today with a Halloween party and book give away in Earlewood, and I joined Chief Carter for the kickoff event.
Our Police Department will be collecting books in special barrels around the city, including the new South Region Police Headquarters at 2132 Devine Street. The goal is to help our young people experience the joy of reading, and, in the process, to enable them to build a personal library. The program is being coordinated with Richland School District One's new literacy focus, L.E.A.D. (Literacy Excellence Achieves Desired Success).
I am going to be searching through my bookshelves over the next week to see what I can find to contribute.
