Columbia: Join Me with One Book, One Columbia
March 8, 2011
Dear Friends,
If you're like me, then you're always on the lookout for a great book to read. Imagine for a moment that you and all your neighbors and friends found such a book and were reading it at the same time. What interesting conversations and discussions might take place in our city! That's the goal of One Book, One Columbia, a shared reading experience being launched this April by the City of Columbia, Richland County Public Library, and the Columbia Council of Neighborhoods. Together, we're urging all community residents to join us!
The book we'll be reading is Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years by Amy Hill Hearth. A New York Times bestseller, Having Our Say tells the story of Sadie and Bessie Delany, two remarkable women who lived groundbreaking and inspiring lives. Told as a captivating oral history, the story is rich in themes of family, faith, education, and social justice. In fact, Having Our Say is so compelling it was made into both a movie and a Broadway play!
There will be numerous "One Book, One Columbia" activities planned by the Library and other partner organizations to enhance our reading experience. Check out the Library's "One Book" web page for a calendar of events, blog posts by various community readers, and additional information on the program. There is also a "One Book, One Columbia" Facebook page that will provide an interactive social network for readers. You can check out a copy of Having Our Say at all branches as of the Richland County Public Library, or you can purchase your own paperback copy (with a 10% discount) at our local Barnes & Noble bookstores. And be sure to pick up a "One Book, One Columbia" button to identify yourself as a community reader who enjoys sharing ideas and insights with friends and neighbors.
Sincerely,
Belinda Gergel
