A New Park in Edisto Court
June 27, 2009
What better way to cool the children off on a 100-plus degree Saturday than at the new Edisto Court Discovery Park with its fabulous splash pad! The park was opened and dedicated today, and I had the pleasure of moderating the program. When the ribbon cutting ceremony ended, the splash pad magically turned on and in went the children! But this park represents much more than summer recreation--it will become the centerpiece of community in this neighborhood and section of Rosewood.
Longtime residents and leaders of the Edisto Court community including Ms. Bessie Watson, Mr. Isaac McClinton, and Mrs. Donzell Belton saw the park opening as the culmination of years of efforts to provide neighborhood children with a safe place to play, learn, and grow. In addition, there is a new “Neighborhood Center” for classes and programs for children of all ages. Last Monday night I joined residents of the Edisto Court neighborhood for their first community meeting in the brand new facility.
Plans for the park have been in the making for a number of years and were spearheaded by former City Councilwoman Ann Sinclair. I had the opportunity to help see the final plans come together. Our city has made a wise investment in this important area of District 3. What a treat to share in the excitement and promise of this new city park.
