A Win for Our Neighborhoods and Our City
Yesterday was a great day for the in town neighborhoods of Columbia with City Council unanimously supporting the Interim Measures for Community Character Ordinance. City Council rejected the efforts of the Homebuilders' Association to gut the ordinance after what today's State newspaper described as the most "intense" lobbying campaign in the recent history of the city. This campaign included slick mass mailings and misleading phone banks designed to confuse our residents over the intent of the ordinance.
In response, many of you contacted city leaders and turned out in force for yesterday's "standing room only" public hearing at City Hall. Neighborhood leaders and residents spoke out eloquently for the preservation of the character and beauty of their communities and for appropriate infill development.
The first reading of the formal adoption of the ordinance will be held on February 20, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. at Hand Middle School. I urge you to mark your calendar now and make plans to attend as we complete the process of adopting the Community Character Ordinance.
Sincerely,

Belinda Gergel
